In a pair such as EURUSD, the first code is the base currency and the second is the quote currency. The price tells you how much quote currency buys one unit of base.
Your platform shows a bid and an ask. The difference is the spread, one of the explicit costs of trading. Tighter spreads often appear in liquid sessions; they can widen around news or at rollover.
